A Birder's Paradise
A remarkable 418 bird species are found at Uitvlugt Resort, which forms part of the popular Rust de Winter Dam and Nature Reserve and the bigger Dinokeng area – a veritable birder’s paradise. The region’s prolific birdlife is explained by its incredible array of unique habitats, ranging from acacia savanna and dry woodland to the lush riverine forests along the Elands River and Rust de Winter Dam. Although the area is one of the best year-round birding sites in South Africa, visiting migrants increase the resident bird population by up to 20%.
Diversity is key here, with sightings ranging from kingfishers to waders to raptors. Large storks are frequently seen, including the Marabou, the Saddle-billed Stork and the Abdim’s Stork, while the riverbanks provide nesting sites for colonies of iridescent bee-eater and kingfisher rarities.
